In Nineteen Hundred and fifteen it was named as Seal Beach. It was constructed during the Second World War. It was source of munitions for the most of US fleets.

On October 12, 2011, a beauty salon located on Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach was the site of a mass shooting leaving eight people dead and one other injured. It was the deadliest mass killing in Orange County history.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.0 square miles (34 km²). 11.3 square miles (29 km²) of it is land and 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²) of it (13.45%) is water.
